Empowerment for women is not just about providing them the freedom to practice their constitutional rights. It is also about offering equal job opportunities, providing safety and protecting the girl child. Keeping all the factors affecting women empowerment in mind, the government must formulate plans and programs that can help poor women achieve equal status as the men in the society. While there is a lot that needs to be done, the government has launched certain programs to enable welfare of women in various sectors. Continuing on the topic, in this blog post, we discuss some of the programs launched by the government to enable women empowerment. Read on. 1. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao YojanaBeti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, launched on January 22, 2015 by the government of India, aims at creating awareness and improving the welfare services for the female child. Though the initial agenda of this campaign was to focus on the declining child sex ratio, it has, however, now broadened its horizon and also addresses gender-biased sex-selective eliminations. The initiative also works towards propagating quality education, survival, and protection of girl children. 2. Mahila-E-HaatThe government of India, in conjunction with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, launched Mahila-E-Haat, a bilingual online marketing platform in 2016. Mahila-E-Haat provides self-help groups, NGOs, and individual aspiring women entrepreneurs a platform to exhibit their products and services directly in front of the buyers. This platform along with enabling a direct contact between the buyers and sellers also provides training, sensitisation, and packing and soft intervention workshops to help poor women earn a livelihood. 3. Mahila Shakti KendraMahila Shakti Kendra was launched by the government of India to provide digital literacy, employment opportunities, and skill development programs to women from poor and marginalized communities. This program works through community engagement with the help of student volunteers in more than hundred most backward districts of the country. Wrap UpWhile the government has been doing its job, some of the gender equality NGOs are also contributing to uplift the status of women in the country. These NGOs working for women’s rights ensure that the benefits of the government launched programs reach those in need. However, such NGOs require funding to operate and carry out various campaigns. You too can do your bit and bolster the efforts of various NGOs working for women's rights by making a donation. Choose a reputable gender equality NGO and contribute today.
